Kim David Smith Nominated for 2015 Helpmann Award!

I’m extremely proud and humbled to be nominated for a 2015 Helpmann Award! Nominated alongside cabaret legends David Campbell and Camille O’Sullivan in the Best Cabaret Performer category, I’m excited to salute my dear friends Chris Durling, Trevor Ashley, and Jenny Rivera for their nominations (Supporting Role in a Musical/Performer in an Opera), and also my idol and Australian icon, Kylie Minogue!

The Helpmann Awards, named in honour of Sir Robert Helpmann and to commemorate his memory and achievements, were established in 2001 by Live Performance Australia (LPA) to recognise, celebrate and promote Australia’s live performance industry, similar to the Tony Awards on Broadway and the Olivier Awards in London.

Kim David Smith’s “Nova Noir” will take the stage at The Manderley Bar, NYC (February 3 at 10:30PM), conjuring the glitter and doom of Weimar-era Germany, and the electronic heartbeat of modern pop in a Frankenstein’s monster of genre-mashing and music making.

Fronting his electro-cabaret band led by the inimitable Benjamin Ickies, Smith performs his own electropop originals alongside peculiar period treasures (in German, Japanese, French and English), incorporating works by Friedrich Hollaender, Kylie Minogue, Kurt Weill, Madonna, The Supremes, Mischa Spoliansky, and myriad others.

“Completely stellar…slyly subversive.”

Will Friedwald, The Wall Street Journal, NYC

“He happily considers himself as a misfit, and goes about proving his point in several languages. There’s no one else around these days offering the kind of cabaret that he does so compellingly. Well, maybe Ute Lemper, but that’s it. Smith needs to be seen, and now.”

David Finkle, The Village Voice, New York City

Kim Smith: Nova Noir

October 2, The Gallery at Le Poisson Rouge, NYC — Doors open at 7, Programme at 7:30 — $10 advance tickets, $15 at the door

My own electropop originals (available here on iTunes) receive a decadent 1920’s treatment at the hands of accordionist/music director Benjamin Ickies and our rogue band of marauding musicians in NOVA NOIR an evening of dark, disfigured pop and peculiar period treasures.

Nova Noir re-imagines works by Weimar-era composers, and modern-day artists alike, including: Friedrich Hollaender, Cher, Kurt Weill, the Supremes, Kylie Minogue, Hanns Eisler, and myriad glittering others, and incorporates electropop gems from my debut album, “Nova.”

Copies of Nova and my cabaret EP, The Tease, will be available for purchase after the show. Nova is available on iTunes, Amazon and Spotify, worldwide.

Listen below to Edith Piaf’s classic, “Padam” as transformed by myself and Benjamin Ickies, in our ’90’s trip-hop studio recording:

“(Smith) embodies all that is unique about this art form — it would be a challenge to look away from him. There isn’t an extraneous gesture, expression, word or note. He has chiseled away everything that is unimportant to get down to a precise core. This is cabaret at its best and most interesting!”

Arthur Frank, Cabaret Scenes Magazine, New York City
